The first trailer for Joe Carnahan’s action thriller The Rip has landed, giving a taste of the writer-director’s trademark sharp dialogue, morally complicated characters, and plenty of tension.
The film’s powerhouse ensemble includes Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler, with Néstor Carbonell (Shōgun) and Lina Esco (S.W.A.T.) rounding out the cast.
The Rip will premiere globally on Netflix on January 16, 2026.
What’s The Rip About?
Set in Miami, the story follows a group of cops who discover millions of dollars hidden inside a derelict stash house. What begins as a major bust soon unravels into suspicion, betrayal, and a fight for survival as outside forces learn about the money and loyalties start to fracture.
Carnahan says the project was inspired by a close friend who once led tactical narcotics for Miami-Dade police — a personal story that he wove together with his love of gritty ’70s cop thrillers like Serpico and Prince of the City. Fans of Michael Mann’s Heat will also feel that same DNA pulsing through this new film.
The title itself comes from Miami cop slang: a “rip” refers to seizing a criminal’s cash, drugs, or weapons.
Who’s Playing Who
- Matt Damon as Lieutenant Dane Dumars
- Ben Affleck as Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne
- Teyana Taylor as Detective Numa Baptiste
- Catalina Sandino Moreno as Detective Lolo Salazar
- Sasha Calle as Desi
- Kyle Chandler as DEA Agent Mateo “Matty” Nix
Taylor continues her run of standout performances, following A Thousand and One and The Book of Clarence. Here, she brings her intensity to Detective Baptiste, adding another impressive role to her growing filmography.
Damon & Affleck Back in Sync
Damon and Affleck have been longtime creative partners — from their Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting to recent collaborations like The Last Duel and Air. With The Rip, they’re not only starring but also producing through Artists Equity, the studio they co-founded in 2022.
For Carnahan, working with them was a seamless process: “They took exceptionally good care of me and backed my decisions every step of the way,” he told Netflix’s Tudum.
With its stacked cast, morally gray characters, and Carnahan’s signature grit, The Rip looks like a throwback thriller with plenty of modern edge — and one that will be hard to miss when it drops.
