Tyler Perry Teases ‘Why Did I Get Married Again?’ Script, Sparking Hope for Third Film in Franchise

Tyler Perry is reigniting buzz around his hit relationship drama franchise, Why Did I Get Married?, teasing what appears to be the long-awaited third installment.

On Wednesday, July 30, Perry posted a cryptic photo on Instagram of a script cover page titled Why Did I Get Married Again? with the words “Table Draft” printed across the top—a term often used in the early stages of production, typically for read-throughs with cast and crew. While no further details were shared, Perry captioned the post simply: “I’m just gonna sit this right here!”

The post also tagged several key cast members from the original ensemble: Jill Scott, Janet Jackson, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Sharon Leal, Richard T. Jones, and Lamman Rucker—many of whom quickly jumped into the comments. Tasha Smith added fuel to the fire, reposting the image with the caption “BOOM”—a direct reference to her now-iconic line from the franchise’s unforgettable dinner table scene. Denise Boutte, who played Trina, also chimed in, asking fans: “Who thinks Trina needs a comeback?!?!”

The Why Did I Get Married? films, which began in 2007 and continued with Why Did I Get Married Too? in 2010, follow four couples navigating the highs and lows of marriage during emotionally charged retreats. The original two films earned a combined $115 million at the box office and featured an ensemble that included Perry, Scott, Jackson, White, Smith, Leal, Jones, and Malik Yoba.

While Perry has previously teased the idea of a third film—most recently in late 2024 when he posted what looked like the first page of the script—he also walked back expectations. In a December 2024 appearance on Sherri, Perry told host Sherri Shepherd that while he wanted to make another installment, “it’s a lot of logistics to try to get it together… everybody’s got things going on.”

The road to a potential third film has been paved with playful social media posts that kept the fandom hopeful. It all began in October 2024 when Richard T. Jones posted a TikTok joking about his character Mike leaving Sheila (Jill Scott) behind on a snowy mountain in the first film. That post kicked off a lighthearted digital reunion, with responses from Scott, Smith, White, and Leal—each one referencing iconic moments from the first two movies. Janet Jackson and Malik Yoba were notably absent from the social chatter, though Yoba’s character Gavin died in the sequel.

While “Table Draft” is not an industry term set in stone, it’s typically used to describe a version of the script meant for early table reads—a step that generally happens before filming begins. It could mean the script is now finalized enough to be shared with the cast, suggesting that Perry is moving beyond the idea phase and into actual development.

Despite the lack of official word on where or when Why Did I Get Married Again? might premiere, fans are already celebrating the possibility of revisiting the beloved characters and their ever-dramatic retreats.

For now, one thing’s clear: the cast wants it, the fans want it, and Perry has a script in hand.

Whether it’s a streaming debut or a theatrical release, audiences will be watching closely to see if Why Did I Get Married Again? officially gets the green light.
