Tyler Perry is bringing back familiar faces and welcoming new ones for Why Did I Get Married Again?, the Netflix sequel to his 2007 hit Why Did I Get Married?.
The original film, adapted from Perry’s stage play, followed four married couples—close friends who reunited once a year for a weeklong vacation. While the retreat was meant to help them relax and reconnect, it often turned into a test of their marriages, exposing infidelity, mistrust, and the struggle to hold love together. It starred Perry, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, and Sharon Leal, who all return for the new installment.
They’ll now be joined by fresh additions to the ensemble, including Taraji P. Henson, Armani Greer, Everett Osborne, Da’Vinchi, Laya Deleon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Charles L. Smith, Derrick A. King, and Sydney Winbush. In the sequel, the couples come together once again, this time to celebrate Marcus (White) and Angela’s (Smith) daughter’s wedding. But the joyous occasion quickly reminds them that as much as life moves forward, some dynamics never change. Watching their children repeat many of the same choices they once made, the group is forced to reflect on the examples they’ve set and ask themselves the lingering question: why did they get married… again?
Perry will write, direct, and produce alongside Angi Bones and Tony Strickland. The film is part of his ongoing creative partnership with Netflix, which has already delivered global hits like Madea’s Destination Wedding and Straw, the latter reaching the Top 10 Movies List in 93 countries and topping charts in 62.
