Winston Duke and LaKeith Stanfield are the latest stars to join the voice cast of Slime, the upcoming dystopian animated feature marking the feature debut of Sundance prize-winner Jeron Braxton.
They join an already stacked ensemble led by Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and Willow Smith, alongside Teyana Taylor, Anna Sawai, John Cho, and John Boyega. Production is set to kick off later this month, with Capstone Global on board to handle worldwide sales.
Set in a near-future world, Slime centers on Muna (Smith), an optimistic but broke young woman who signs up for a paid clinical trial. When she’s injected with a mysterious creature’s slime, she gains uncontrollable powers that turn her life — and the world — upside down. Forced to flee, she kidnaps Glenn (Mescudi), the lab worker who injected her, and the two embark on a dangerous journey across a collapsing dystopia in search of refuge and a cure. As time runs out, Muna must face whether she’s evolving into humanity’s greatest threat or its most unlikely savior.
Described as an anime-inspired, pre-apocalyptic sci-fi monster film with retro video game aesthetics, the project is written by Brian Ash and will feature an original soundtrack and score by Kid Cudi himself.
Slime is being financed by Hammerstone Studios and Script 2 Screen, produced in partnership with Mad Solar and Capstone Pictures. Producers include Alex Lebovici, Mescudi, Karina Manashil, Smith, and Aaron Bergman. Executive producers include Ibrahim Mohammed, Chase Vergari, Craig Peck, Dennis Cummings, Brian Ash, Michael Learner, Jon Oakes, Christian Mercuri, Courtney Chenn, Waylen Lin, and Alex Kaplunov. Folks VFX will handle animation services.
Duke, known for his standout role as M’Baku in Marvel’s Black Panther films and Jordan Peele’s Us, was most recently seen opposite Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in The Fall Guy.
Stanfield, who recently starred in Roofman and Play Dirty, has a packed slate ahead, including The Wrong Girls (Neon), F.A.S.T. (Warner Bros.), and Boots Riley’s I Love Boosters.
Between Braxton’s bold visual style, Cudi’s creative influence, and a powerhouse voice cast, Slime is shaping up to be one of the most distinctive animated projects on the horizon.
