The 24th Annual Black Reel Awards nominations are in, and The Color Purple leads the pack with an impressive nineteen nods, dominating this year’s competition. The film’s adaptation of the musical, directed by Blitz Bazawule, garnered almost double the nominations of its closest rival, Rustin. Fantasia Barrino received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Performance, while the ensemble cast earned multiple nominations across various categories.

Colman Domingo and Jamie Foxx stand out with dual nominations. Cord Jefferson and A.V. Rockwell lead the nomination count with five each, both recognized as writer/directors in their respective films. Notably, the Outstanding Film category boasts strong contenders such as Ava DuVernay’s Origin, Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction, and the visually stunning animated feature Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse breaks ground as the first animated film in the Outstanding Film category, securing nominations for Outstanding Editing and Outstanding Production Design. Quincy Jones, at ninety years old, becomes the oldest nominee for his role as a film producer, while costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck makes history with nominations for two films in the same year.
Beyoncé continues her impressive track record with a seventh nomination for Outstanding Original Song, “My House,” from her documentary Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé. The documentary itself achieves historic recognition with nominations in Outstanding Production and Outstanding Costume Design, making Beyoncé the first to be nominated in documentary, musical, and professional categories in a single year.
The awards ceremony, combining the 24th Annual Black Reel Movie Awards and 7th Annual Black Reel TV Awards, is set for Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Tune in to discover which nominees will claim the coveted Bolt trophy this year.
