Andre Royo Joins James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’

Andre Royo is officially entering the DC Universe.

Director, writer, and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed that he has cast Royo in the upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow—but kept details about his character tightly under wraps.

“After fifteen years it’s great to be working with Andre again!” Gunn shared, referencing their previous collaboration on Super.

Royo joins an already loaded lineup, including: David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern, Adria Arjona as Maxima, and Lars Eidinger as Brainiac

A Mystery Role… With Fan Theories Already Brewing

While Gunn didn’t reveal who Royo will play, that hasn’t stopped speculation. One of the biggest fan theories? That he could be portraying Martian Manhunter—also known as J’onn J’onzz.

The shapeshifting alien hero has long been a core member of the Justice League but hasn’t had a major live-action spotlight on the big screen. Gunn has previously teased the character’s existence in his DC plans, adding fuel to the theory.

Royo is best known for his unforgettable performance as Reginald “Bubbles” Cousins on The Wire, along with roles in Empire, To Leslie, and Beautiful Boy. His addition brings a grounded, character-driven presence that could add real weight to Gunn’s evolving DC slate.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027, with production currently underway in Atlanta.
