Netflix’s upcoming political thriller, “Zero Day,” adds Angela Bassett, Dan Stevens, Matthew Modine, Bill Camp, and McKinley Belcher III to its cast.
The series, featuring Robert De Niro in his first lead TV role, centers around the investigation of a global cyberattack and explores the challenges of discerning truth in a world dominated by conspiracy theories.
The six-episode limited series “asks the question on everyone’s mind — how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?”
TV veteran Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland, Mad Men) will direct all six episodes. Clark Gregg, Gaby Hoffman and Mark Ivanir have also signed on for guest roles with Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen and Connie Britton rounding out the current cast.
At the heart of the narrative is Robert De Niro’s character, George Mullen, a former president called out of retirement to lead a commission investigating a devastating cyber-attack.
Bassett will play the current President, President Mitchell, a political tactician with allegiance to Mullen, appointing him to lead the commission. Dan Stevens takes on the role of Evan Green, a charismatic TV host and Mullen’s chief critic. Matthew Modine portrays Richard Dreyer, a confident Speaker of the House, while Bill Camp becomes CIA Director Lasche, an insider with knowledge of critical secrets. McKinley Belcher III is Carl Lopez, a DOJ lawyer leading the investigation.
As production continues in New York, “Zero Day” promises a tense exploration of political intrigue and cyber threats. With De Niro also serving as an executive producer, and talents like Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim, and Michael Schmidt behind the scenes, the series aims to deliver a compelling narrative without unnecessary embellishments.
