RLJE Films has announced the release of “The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster,” a modern reinterpretation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Written and directed by Bomani J. Story in his directorial debut, the horror/thriller will be released in theaters, on VOD, and on Digital on June 9, 2023.

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster explores the idea that death is a disease that can be cured, through the story of Vicaria, a brilliant teenager who embarks on a dangerous journey to bring her murdered brother back to life. The film stars Laya DeLeon Hayes (“The Equalizer”), Denzel Whitaker (“Black Panther”), and Chad L. Coleman (“The Walking Dead”), Reilly Brooke Stith, and Keith Holliday.

Inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic novel, “The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster” reimagines the mad scientist archetype in a unique and thought-provoking way, challenging our ideas of life and death. The film thematically explores the impact of systemic pressure on families, and the resilience needed to survive and be reborn.

“The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster” is produced by Jack Davis, Darren Brandl, and Bomani J. Story, with Jeremy Elliott and Jasmine Johnson serving as executive producers. The film also features Daphne Qin Wu as the cinematographer, Annie De Brock as the editor, and Mark Bankins as the production designer. The music is composed by Nima Fakhrara.
