Apple TV+ Renews Detective Drama Series ‘Sugar’ for Season 2

SUGAR RENEWED SEASON 2

The detective drama Sugar, starring Colin Farrell, has officially been renewed for a second season on Apple TV+. The series, which made its debut in April 2024, follows private investigator John Sugar (Farrell) as he navigates complex missing persons cases in Los Angeles. Farrell will reprise his role in the upcoming season.

In Season 1, Sugar was hired by Hollywood mogul Jonathan Siegel, portrayed by James Cromwell, to solve the disappearance of Siegel’s granddaughter, Olivia, played by Sydney Chandler. The series garnered significant attention for its twists, particularly a shocking revelation in episode six, and achieved an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Alongside Farrell, the first season featured Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Amy Ryan, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry,  Sydney Chandler, and Alex Hernandez. Farrell’s nuanced portrayal of the troubled detective added depth to the genre-blending show, which mixes noir detective tropes with science fiction.

Season 2 will delve deeper into Sugar’s personal life, with the plot centering around another missing person’s case as he continues his search for answers regarding his own missing sister.

Sam Catlin, known for his work on AMC’s Preacher, will take over as showrunner from Mark Protosevich, who created the series. Catlin will also serve as an executive producer under his Short Drive Entertainment banner.

Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+, praised Farrell’s performance and the series’ unique genre-blending approach, stating, “Colin, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon, and the entire team have brilliantly created a can’t-miss series that keeps viewers guessing.”
