Becoming Michael: New ‘Michael’ BTS Footage Shows Jaafar Jackson’s Intense Preparation to Transform Into His Uncle

A new behind-the-scenes look at Michael is pulling audiences deeper into the making of one of the most anticipated biopics of the year, spotlighting Jaafar Jackson’s transformation into the global icon and the intense preparation behind it.

The newly released footage follows Jackson through extensive rehearsals as he steps into the role of his uncle, offering a rare look at the discipline, movement work, and emotional weight required to portray Michael Jackson. The featurette is paired with new interviews from Jackson, director Antoine Fuqua, and producer Graham King, giving additional insight into the creative vision driving the film.

Rather than positioning itself as a surface-level retelling, Michael leans into a more intimate and character-driven approach. The film traces Jackson’s journey from his early days as the breakout lead of the Jackson 5 to his rise as a once-in-a-generation solo artist, while also exploring the pressures, expectations, and personal cost that came with global superstardom.

Jaafar Jackson leads the film in his feature debut, following a reported two-year audition process to land the role. His casting was backed by the Jackson family, with Katherine Jackson noting that he “embodies” Michael. Jackson himself has spoken about the responsibility of taking on the role, calling it both an honor and a deeply personal experience.

The film features an expansive ensemble cast portraying key figures throughout Jackson’s life and career, including:

  • Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson
  • Nia Long as Katherine Jackson
  • Miles Teller as John Branca
  • Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe
  • Kat Graham as Diana Ross
  • Larenz Tate as Berry Gordy
  • Derek Luke
  • Jessica Sula as La Toya Jackson
  • Liv Symone as Gladys Knight
  • Kevin Shinick as Dick Clark

Written by John Logan, the film is produced by Graham King alongside John Branca and John McClain, with King bringing experience from Bohemian Rhapsody, one of the highest-grossing music biopics to date.

After multiple delays and creative adjustments — including reports of an earlier cut running over three-and-a-half hours — Michael is now officially set to hit theaters worldwide on April 24, 2026.

Ahead of that, the film will debut through one-night-only early access screenings on Wednesday, April 22, presented exclusively in premium formats like IMAX and Dolby. General tickets will go on sale March 26.

With new footage now giving a clearer look at both the scale and the intention behind the film, Michael is positioning itself as more than just a biopic — but a deeper look at the man behind one of the most influential careers in music history.
