“We just partnered with Bernie Mac’s estate to cover Bernie Mac’s story,” Jackson said, seemingly surprising Legend as he said the info was “something that John doesn’t know about yet” and that he was “very excited about” the deal, which “just happened today.”

While further details weren’t John Legend did note that this would be “The Soul Men reunion you all wanted to see.” He was referring to the 2008 film Soul Men, which was Mac’s final role. In the film Legend portrayed Marcus Hooks in the film. He was a member of a soul group whose death prompts his bandmembers, Louis Hinds (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd Henderson (Mac), to try to put aside their difference for a reunion tour.

“It’s about the opportunities to tell a story that you feel are important,” Jackson said.
