Two original Book of Mormon cast members are heading back to Broadway. Nikki M. James and Rory O’Malley will return to the Eugene O’Neill Theatre for a strictly limited 12-week engagement, running October 27, 2026, through January 17, 2027.
The Book of Mormon follows Elder Price, an ambitious, by-the-book missionary who dreamed of a glamorous posting, and his assigned companion Elder Cunningham, an awkward, compulsive liar who’s never actually read the scripture he’s meant to preach. Sent together to a small Ugandan village grappling with poverty, AIDS, and a violent warlord, far from their sheltered expectations, the two struggle to connect their rehearsed missionary pitch to people facing real crises.
When Elder Price abandons the mission in despair, Elder Cunningham begins improvising his own version of Mormon scripture, blending in elements of Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, and his invented teachings end up resonating with the village in ways the official doctrine never did. Irreverent and crude on the surface, courtesy of creators Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone (the minds behind South Park), the musical builds toward a surprisingly warm-hearted message about the power of storytelling and belief to genuinely help people.
James will step back into her Tony-winning role as Nabulungi, while O’Malley reprises his Tony-nominated turn as Elder McKinley. Both actors previously teased the reunion by performing selected scenes and songs during the show’s “Magical Mormon Mystery Week” in June, but this marks their first time playing the roles in full since the original run.
James won the 2011 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for originating the role of Nabulungi. Her other credits include a Tony-nominated performance as Ida B. Wells in Suffs, Éponine in the Broadway revival of Les Misérables, and Audrey in the recent Off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors, which ran through July of this year. She currently stars in Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+ and recurs in Apple TV+’s Severance.
O’Malley earned a Tony nomination for originating Elder McKinley and went on to star as King George III in Hamilton, both on Broadway and on tour. He made his Broadway debut in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, with additional screen credits including Dreamgirls, Modern Family, and Grace and Frankie.
The pair join a current Broadway company led by Kevin Clay as Elder Price, Diego Enrico as Elder Cunningham, Sydney Quildon as Nabulungi, Charlie Franklin as Elder McKinley, and Jacques C. Smith as Mafala Hatimbi, who will share the stage with James and O’Malley throughout the engagement.
The Book of Mormon, with book, music, and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone, opened on Broadway March 24, 2011, and is currently marking its 15th anniversary. Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, with Parker co-directing, the show went on to win nine 2011 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, along with the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. It remains the longest-running show in the 100-year history of the Eugene O’Neill Theatre and the 10th longest-running musical in Broadway history. The opening night cast also included Josh Gad, Andrew Rannells, and Michael Potts.
