Criminal Minds: Evolution will end with its upcoming 20th season on Paramount+, Variety reports. The decision marks the first official cancellation under new Paramount+ leadership, Co-Chair and Chief Content Officer for Skydance Direct to Consumer Casey Bloys, though sources say the call followed a recommendation from the previous Paramount+ regime, which had given the show an early Season 20 renewal back in March, ahead of Season 19’s debut.
The cancellation comes despite strong performance: the series remains in Paramount+’s Top 10 and recently ranked No. 11 among 2026’s most-streamed titles overall, racking up 13.15 billion minutes watched. The decision may instead reflect cost considerations tied to Evolution‘s structure as a broadcast-style procedural operating on a streaming budget, a model Paramount+ had previously used for continuations like SEAL Team, Frasier, and NCIS: Tony & Ziva, all of which have also wrapped. Season 20, which wrapped production this fall and will premiere in 2027, was shot without knowledge that it would serve as a series finale, meaning the show won’t get a deliberately planned ending.
Showrunner and executive producer Erica Messer said the cancellation decision was sudden, reflecting on the show’s full run spanning 15 seasons on CBS and five more on Paramount+. “While suddenly navigating the end of this chapter, I’m filled with gratitude for our remarkable cast, writers, directors and crew,” she said, adding that she’s looking forward to “celebrating the legacy of this special show we’ve all built together.”
The cast learned the news in real time alongside fans. Kirsten Vangsness, who has played Penelope Garcia throughout the show’s run, said she found out just 90 minutes before the announcement went public, sharing her reaction in an Instagram video that leaned on a mix of gratitude and resistance to a full goodbye. “I love my job and my boss Erica Messer says there’s so many more stories to tell,” she said. “So if we get to keep telling them somewhere, that would be amazing.” RJ Hatanaka and Aisha Tyler both shared a cast group photo on Instagram, with Tyler captioning it “Family for life,” while A.J. Cook, who has played JJ since the original series premiered in 2005, wrote that the cast “own my heart forever and always.”
Criminal Minds originally ended its CBS run in 2020 after 15 seasons before being revived on Paramount+ as Evolution in 2022. Even with a combined 20 seasons, the franchise remains tied for fifth among the longest-running drama series in television history, trailing Law & Order: SVU, the original Law & Order, NCIS, and Grey’s Anatomy, all four of which remain on the air. The franchise also spawned two short-lived spinoffs, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior in 2011 and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders from 2016 to 2017.
Evolution stars Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, and RJ Hatanaka, alongside Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster. Messer executive produces alongside Breen Frazier, Chris Barbour, Glenn Kershaw, Stacey Hardt, and Mark Gordon. The series is produced by 20th Television and CBS Studios.
With Season 20 already filmed before anyone knew it would be the finale, the biggest open question now is whether Paramount+ or another platform ultimately gives the franchise the planned sendoff Messer and the cast have said they still hope to deliver.
