Prime Video has released a teaser trailer and first-look images for Criminal, a new series based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novels by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. All four episodes of Criminal: Part One “Coward” premiere January 13, 2027, followed by all four episodes of Criminal: Part Two “Lawless” on January 27. The series streams exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories.
Criminal opens with the story of two friends, Leo Patterson, played by Charlie Hunnam, and Ricky Lawless, played by Gus Halper, one trying to escape the criminal world he was raised in, the other determined to follow in the footsteps of his legendary outlaw father. Everything shifts when Ricky’s older brother Tracy, played by Luke Evans, returns home from the Army, bringing their family’s tragic history back with him. Also pulled into their orbit are Greta, a sharp-tongued car thief from Leo’s past played by Adria Arjona, and Mallory, Ricky’s girlfriend, played by Emilia Clarke, who fears what he’s willing to do to survive.
Part One, “Coward,” follows decades-old family secrets resurfacing as Leo and Ricky are haunted by a childhood murder and a heist gone wrong, pulling them face-to-face with a past they can’t outrun. Part Two, “Lawless,” picks up with Tracy, who chose the Army over prison 20 years earlier and never looked back, forced to return to the life he fled once Ricky gets in over his head with dangerous people.
The series also stars Kadeem Hardison, Logan Browning, Richard Jenkins, and John Hawkes. The recurring and guest cast includes Taylor Selé, Aliyah Camacho, Marvin Jones III, Michael Xavier, Michael Mando, Garrett Hedlund, Patrick J. Adams, Pat Healy, Dominic Burgess, Chris Diamantopoulos, Lawrence Kao, Katie Stevens, John Pyper-Ferguson, Robert Lee Hart, Aina Brei’yon, and Kyle Davis.
Brubaker and Phillips executive produce alongside Philipp A. Barnett, Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Jordan Harper, Sarah Carbiener, Dee Rees, and Halley Gross, with Cortney Norris and Minhal Baig serving as co-executive producers. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Basement Gang, Big Indie Pictures, Gowanus Projections, and Legendary Television Productions.
With the story split into two distinct parts released two weeks apart, Prime Video is betting that Criminal‘s interlocking structure, following different characters within the same world, gives the series room to build tension gradually rather than front-loading the entire plot into a single release.
