Crystal Renee Hayslett to Lead Courtney Glaude’s Psychological Thriller ‘Conditioned,’ First Film Under Tyler Perry Studios’ Maxscene Division

Crystal Renee Hayslett will star as the lead in Conditioned, the psychological thriller marking writer-director Courtney Glaudé’s first film release through Maxscene, Tyler Perry Studios’ new specialty division. Glaudé and Antoinetta Stallings, Maxscene’s head of development and acquisitions, debuted the film’s key art and shared new details about the project during a Maxscene-focused panel at CultureCon, where they appeared alongside Hayslett. Conditioned is slated for release in early 2027.

Glaudé cast Hayslett after watching her performance in a scene on Sistas, where the two already work together alongside the show’s spinoff Zatima and the crime drama Ruthless. “I saw her in a scene, and the scene was really, really powerful in a short amount of time,” Glaudé said. “I already had the story in mind, but she gave me the actress that I needed.” He described Conditioned as “a psychological thriller about how we love and what we’re conditioned, how we are conditioned to see love in a certain manner,” and said he shot the film in his hometown of Houston, encouraging other filmmakers in the room to look into local incentives in their own cities.

For Hayslett, the role marks her first lead in a feature film. “I was honored and humbled when Courtney came to me,” she said, reflecting on what it meant to have someone build a project specifically around her. “To have someone see me, to see the talent that I have in me, and say, ‘Hey, I want to build this film around you,’ meant so much.” She added that working through the film’s heavier emotional moments required leaning on gratitude. “I was so grateful that someone believed in me.”

Maxscene, launched to give independent filmmakers theatrical distribution and resources often out of reach for creators working outside major studio systems, operates on three stated principles: believe, create, connect. Stallings compared the division’s relationship to Tyler Perry Studios to a label structure, saying, “If Tyler Perry Studios is Death Row, then Maxscene is Roc-A-Fella, and I’m Dame Dash, and we’re looking for Kanye and Rihanna,” framing the division as a place for filmmakers with a full catalog in them, not just one project. Glaudé fit that model directly: he made his short film Old Gray Mare for roughly $2,500, funded by money he earned working as a school janitor, before the film’s festival success led Tyler Perry Studios to bring him on in 2024.

With Conditioned now carrying its first key art into the world as Maxscene’s inaugural release, the bigger question moving into 2027 is whether the division can keep pairing resources with directors willing to take creative risks most studios wouldn’t greenlight.
