Sony Pictures has released the official trailer for Prima Facie, the legal drama starring Cynthia Erivo as a hotshot young barrister whose life unravels after she’s sexually assaulted by someone in her own legal circle. The film world premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this month and opens in UK and Irish theaters November 13 and Australia beginning January 14, 2027. No North American release date has been announced; UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance are co-repping sales.
Erivo stars as Tessa, a working-class-born trial lawyer who has built her career defending, cross-examining, and winning, including as a go-to defender of men charged with sexual assault. When she becomes an accuser herself, the case forces her to confront the fault lines where the law’s power, the burden of proof, and her own morals diverge, unsettling a belief in the judicial system that once defined her identity.
Directed by Susanna White (The Buccaneer, Andor), the film is adapted from Suzie Miller’s acclaimed one-woman play of the same name, with Miller also writing the screenplay. The stage production starred Jodie Comer, who won an Olivier Award for the West End run and a Tony Award for her Broadway performance, among a string of other honors including the Evening Standard Award and WhatsOnStage Award for Best Actress.
The film’s cast also includes Daniel Ings, Toheeb Jimoh, and Noma Dumezweni. Erivo executive produces through her banner Edith’s Daughter, alongside a large group of additional executive producers including Solome Williams, Anita Verma-Lallian, Malinda Wink, Hugo Grumbar, Tim Haslam, Miller, White, Cecilia Ritchie, Jenny Cooney, Jon Hamm, Andrew Low, Zack Sherman, Ian Hutchinson, and Saskia Thomas. Greer Simpkin, Kevin Loader, and David Jowsey produce, with Celia Duval serving as co-producer.
The release adds to a packed stretch for Erivo, the Emmy, Tony, and two-time Grammy winner who earned her third Academy Award nomination for playing Elphaba in Wicked, the highest-grossing movie of all time based on a Broadway musical at the domestic box office. She recently wrapped production on Paramount’s Children of Blood and Bone, alongside an ensemble that includes Viola Davis, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Idris Elba, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, Regina King, and Lashana Lynch, as well as the film Karoshi. In November 2025, she also published her book Simply More: A Book for Anyone Who Has Been Told They’re Too Much, which became an instant New York Times bestseller.
