DeWanda Wise, Tian Richards and Marcus Mitchell have been set as series regulars in the untitled rodeo drama from creator and showrunner Kirk A. Moore, known for Demascus and American Crime. The one-hour, eight-episode series is expected to begin production in Atlanta later this month and is the second fully owned scripted series Starz has ordered since splitting from Lionsgate in 2025.
As we previously reported, the series unfolds in Southeast Texas, where rodeo is not just what you do but who you are. At its center are three siblings bound by the legacy their mother built and the unfinished business their father left behind. Starz describes it as “infused with hip hop swagger and country soul,” and alongside P-Valley, the series continues to build out what is becoming a distinct Starz lane in premium drama rooted in Black Southern culture.
Wise plays Anaya Clarke-Reagan, the firstborn of the Clarke family. Savvy, polished and highly educated, Anaya is the mayor of Trinity City who has built a conservative public image alongside her powerful judge husband, an image that conceals far darker desires. She will do whatever it takes to secure her political aspirations and protect her family, even from their own father. Wise is known for her work in Three Women and Killing Faith.
Richards plays Rodney Clarke, the fire-starter. Sebastian and Anaya’s smart-ass, openly gay younger brother, Rodney is charming, impulsive and incapable of leaving a wound alone. He has little interest in the family rodeo, preferring to run Big Rod’s Likka Lounge, where it appears he has finally put his troubled past behind him. He has not. When his business is violently robbed and one of his own is killed, Rodney embarks on a reckless quest for revenge that threatens to engulf the entire Clarke family. Richards is known for Tom Swift and Ballard.
Mitchell plays Julius Calhoun, the hometown hero. Sebastian’s closest friend and Trinity City’s most decorated bull rider since Sebastian himself, Julius is disciplined, deeply spiritual and looking to take his career beyond Trinity City. His ambitions put both his body and his friendship with Sebastian to the test. Mitchell is known for Doctor Odyssey and Chicago Fire.
Moore executive produces alongside Mark Johnson and Myki Bajaj of Gran Via Productions, and Tony Hernandez, Elise Henderson and Lilly Burns of Counterpart Studios. Giovanna Desselle and Christina Jokanovich oversee the series for Starz.
