Dulé Hill Boards The Rookie Season 9 as It Moves to Wednesday, Sets Premiere Alongside Spinoff [Teaser Trailer]

Dulé Hill is joining The Rookie’s ninth season as Lt. Hughes, a 30-year police veteran stepping into the role of watch commander while navigating personal turmoil, showrunner Alexi Hawley announced at the show’s New York Comic-Con panel. The news came alongside premiere date confirmations for both The Rookie and its new spinoff, The Rookie: North, which will debut together January 6, 2027, with The Rookie moving to Wednesdays at 9 PM and North following at 10 PM.

The scheduling shift marks the eighth time slot change for The Rookie since its debut, continuing ABC’s pattern of using established procedurals to anchor new blocks and launch spinoffs. Hawley confirmed that Nathan Fillion, Melissa O’Neil, and Eric Winter will all make crossover appearances on The Rookie: North, while Troian Bellisario joins Season 9 as Stevie, a single mother retraining as an LAPD rookie under Nolan’s supervision, and Molly Kunz guest stars as an aspiring EMT. The Rookie: North, set in the Pacific Northwest and led by Jay Ellis, previously confirmed Andy Allo in a guest role as an ER resident.

Hill’s casting adds another recognizable name to a franchise that’s increasingly used high-profile guest and crossover roles to sustain two series running in tandem. With Richard T. Jones’ character Wade Grey also confirmed to be moving into a new role overseeing detectives this season, and Ellis leading an entirely new spinoff cast in a new region, the franchise is distributing its most established talent across a wider ensemble rather than concentrating story weight on a single show, a structural choice that reflects how networks now build out franchise universes to retain audiences across multiple timeslots rather than one flagship series.

A new teaser, screened during the panel, shows Nolan’s team on a high-stakes mission to rescue Tim and Lucy after their Season 8 kidnapping cliffhanger, while The Rookie: North’s footage introduces Ellis’ Alex Holland adjusting to police work in a more rural setting. Both series are produced by Lionsgate Television in partnership with 20th Television and will stream next-day on Hulu.

With two shows now sharing a premiere date and an expanding web of crossover appearances between them, the bigger question heading into January is how sustainable this level of franchise cross-pollination is without diluting either show’s individual identity.
