Edi Gathegi and Andrew Schulz Join Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Miami Vice ’85

Universal Pictures has added two new names to the cast of Miami Vice ’85, its big-screen reimagining of the classic TV series. Edi Gathegi, fresh off his scene-stealing turn as Mr. Terrific in last year’s Superman, and comedian Andrew Schulz are both joining a call sheet that already includes Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler, Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, and John Leguizamo.

Joseph Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick and F1, is helming the project, with production set to begin this November across New York and Miami. The film, written by Dan Gilroy, explores the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami in a new version of the property inspired by the pilot episode of the original 1984 NBC series. Jordan is playing Ricardo Tubbs and Butler is playing James Crockett, the roles originated by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. Gathegi will play a small-time crook with big ambitions who finds himself in over his head. Details on Schulz’s role have not been disclosed.

Gathegi’s casting adds another layer to a year that’s already repositioned him as a go-to scene-stealer in big studio tentpoles. His turn as Mr. Terrific in Superman drew praise for its cool, dry delivery, a performance he’ll reprise in next year’s sequel Man of Tomorrow. His feature credits also include The Harder They Fall opposite Idris Elba, Regina King, and Delroy Lindo, along with X-Men: First Class and a recurring role on Apple TV’s For All Mankind.

Miami Vice ’85 is produced by Dylan Clark and Kosinski, and is set for release by Universal on May 19, 2028.
