ESPN Drops Trailer for ‘Boo-Yah: A Portrait of Stuart Scott,’ Honoring the Icon Who Changed Sports—and Culture

ESPN just released the official trailer for Boo-Yah: A Portrait of Stuart Scott, and it’s already clear this isn’t just another 30 for 30 — it’s a celebration of a man who reshaped sports media, pushed culture forward, and made generations of viewers feel seen. Presented by Modelo, the documentary premieres December 10 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN and the ESPN app, airing right after the 2025 Heisman Trophy ceremony.

Directed and produced by Andre Gaines, with ESPN Films, Run & Shoot Filmworks and Cinemation Studios onboard as executive producers, Boo-Yah digs far deeper than the catchphrases and the viral highlights. The film turns the camera back on Stuart Scott — sometimes literally. Using never-before-seen archival material and self-shot home videos, Scott chronicles his own rise from local news in North Carolina to becoming one of ESPN’s most influential voices.

And that voice? It changed the game.

Long before networks embraced hip-hop or Black cultural references on-air, Stuart brought all of that into SportsCenter with confidence, humor and sharp analysis. In an era when few Black anchors were given a national platform, he made SportsCenter feel like it finally belonged to everyone watching at home.

The documentary features a long list of friends, colleagues, athletes and cultural voices who witnessed his impact firsthand, including Charles Barkley, Chris Berman, Vince Carter, Linda Cohn, Common, Michael Eric Dyson, Herm Edwards, Rich Eisen, Kevin Frazier, Mike Greenberg, Jay Harris, Ernie Johnson, Suzy Kolber, Shaquille O’Neal, Robin Roberts, Jeremy Schaap, John Skipper, Kenny Smith, and Michael Smith.
Scott’s family — Jacqueline, Kimberly, Sydni, Synthia, Susan, Stephen, and Taelor Scott — also open up about the man behind the mic.

The film doesn’t shy away from the chapter that made Scott a global symbol of perseverance: his public battle with cancer. The documentary revisits the strength and vulnerability he displayed on and off camera, leading up to his unforgettable ESPYS speech reminding the world, “You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.”

The timing of the premiere is intentional. Boo-Yah will debut during ESPN’s 19th Annual V Week for Cancer Research, supporting the V Foundation and the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund, which advances research efforts and supports underrepresented scientists working to close cancer disparities.

ESPN is also launching a special merchandise collection honoring Jim Valvano and Stuart Scott at the Jimmy V Classic. All ESPN royalties from the collection will be donated to the V Foundation.

It’s been nearly two years since word first got out that ESPN was preparing a 30 for 30 centered on Stuart Scott. Now, viewers finally get to experience the story — in Stuart’s voice, on his terms, and through the people who loved him.

Boo-Yah: A Portrait of Stuart Scott premieres December 10 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN and the ESPN app.
