The film is currently in post-production and rooted in Scandinavian folklore
First look images have arrived for The Punishing, the upcoming supernatural horror film starring John Boyega and Cara Delevingne. The film is currently in post-production and making its market debut at Cannes.
Written and directed by Chris Sparling, the filmmaker behind the Ryan Reynolds thriller Buried, The Punishing is set on a remote Icelandic island where a man miraculously recovers from a terminal illness — but his wife soon discovers the land’s healing powers come at a terrifying price. The film is rooted in Scandinavian folklore.
Boyega, who also serves as a producer on the film, teased the project on Instagram, describing it as “a curse that feeds on the cracks in a relationship” and noting it comes from the producers of Insidious, Barbarian, and Late Night With The Devil.
Delevingne’s involvement comes as her Cannes title Club Kid is generating buzz at the festival, making The Punishing one of two high-profile projects putting her in the spotlight this week.
The film is produced by Steven Schneider of Spooky Pictures, William Shockley and Tom Brady of Tiki Tane Pictures, Luke Daniels of Redwire Pictures, Andrew Corkin of Uncorked Productions, and Boyega. It was fully financed by Redwire and Tiki Tane Pictures. Ignite is handling international sales at the Cannes Market, with WME Independent and UTA Independent Film Group representing domestic rights.
