Lifetime just dropped the trailer for its upcoming original film Give Me Back My Daughter, and it’s already pulling at heartstrings.
Starring Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Gabourey Sidibe, the emotional drama premieres on Saturday, April 5, at 8/7c. Directed by Academy Award winner Kelley Kali (Kemba) and written by Xavier Burgin (The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster), the film is an unflinching look at motherhood, survival, and the cracks in the system.
Sidibe stars as Renee, a single mother doing her best to stay afloat. After losing her job, she and her daughter Imani (played by newcomer Cadence Reese) are evicted and left homeless. Determined to stay independent, Renee refuses public assistance—but when she leaves Imani in the car during a job interview, things spiral fast. She’s arrested, and Child Protective Services takes her daughter.
The story follows Renee’s harrowing journey through the family court system as she fights to get Imani back, learns to lean on others, and discovers that strength doesn’t always mean doing everything alone.
The film also stars Walnette Santiago (P-Valley), Sean Anthony Baker (Swagger), and Myles Truitt (Black Lightning, BMF), rounding out a cast that brings heart and weight to the screen.
Produced by Swirl Films for Lifetime, Give Me Back My Daughter is executive produced by Leslie Greif, Jason Egenberg, Eric Tomosunas, and Ron Robinson.
And producer Jason Egenberg summed up the film’s journey with this powerful note (via Instagram):
“The journey to make this wasn’t easy—films like this never are. But thanks to an extraordinary cast, a fearless crew, a dedicated producer village, and our partners at Lifetime, we brought something powerful to the screen. It’s raw, honest, and unafraid to confront what too many would rather ignore.”
Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 5. With a fierce performance from Sidibe, a fearless vision from Kali, and a story that doesn’t flinch—Give Me Back My Daughter is one you won’t want to miss.
