Glynn Turman is set to join the cast of CBS’s hit sitcom The Neighborhood in season 7. Known for its humorous take on a Midwestern family navigating life in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Pasadena, California, the show will return on October 21. According to TVLine, Turman will bring his talent to a key two-episode arc as Tina’s (Tichina Arnold) “outgoing and likable father” who “drops by for a nice visit.”
He joins returning ensemble cast that includes Cedric the Entertainer as Calvin Butler, Tichina Arnold as his wife Tina, Max Greenfield as Dave Johnson, Beth Behrs as Gemma, Marcel Spears as Marty, and Sheaun McKinney as Malcolm. Skye Townsend, who portrays Marty’s partner Courtney, has also been promoted to series regular this season.
The new season picks up right after the events of the season 6 finale. Marty and Courtney return home with their baby daughter Daphne, but new grandmother Tina faces a challenge—Daphne seems to cry whenever Tina holds her. As family dynamics shift, The Neighborhood promises to maintain its signature blend of heart and humor.
Turman will play Otis, Tina’s father, who arrives with the surprising news that he’s left his second wife and is ready to reenter the dating scene. However, as his visit unfolds, it becomes clear that Otis may not be as independent as he claims. He struggles with basic tasks like driving and sneaks unhealthy foods, revealing that his ex-wife was crucial to his well-being. Tina, who had initially blamed the woman for taking advantage of Otis after her mother’s death, begins to realize that the situation is more complicated than she thought.
This new storyline marks an important shift for Tina’s character, as co-showrunner Mike Schiff noted that Tina has lacked connections outside of her immediate family over the past six seasons. With Otis’s arrival, audiences will get a deeper glimpse into Tina’s personal history and family life.
Turman, an Emmy Award-winning actor, is no stranger to television. Known for his role as Colonel Bradford Taylor in A Different World and as Mayor Clarence Royce in The Wire, his addition to the cast is sure to bring an exciting dynamic to the already strong lineup.
Meanwhile, a spinoff of The Neighborhood titled Crutch is in the works at Paramount+. Starring Tracy Morgan, the new series will introduce audiences to Frank Crutchfield, a Harlem widower whose life takes an unexpected turn when his adult children move back home. This spinoff comes with a twist: Morgan won’t be reprising his season 4 role as Curtis, Calvin’s brother, but will instead play a new character entirely. No release date for Crutch has been announced yet.
Season 7 of The Neighborhood premieres on Monday, October 21 at 8/7c on CBS, and Turman’s debut is slated for early December.
