Barbie just even more popular. Issa Rae joins the cast of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film which stars Margot Robbie in the title role.
Rae joins the ever-growing cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, and most recently Michael Cera AND Hari Nef. Details with regard to the Warner Bros. film’s plot and character roles have thus far been kept under wraps. However we do know that Ferrell will play the CEO of a toy company and Gosling will play Barbie’s counterpart Ken.

Gerwig is directing and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Noah Baumbach. Robbie, in addition to her starring role, is on board as a producer as well. Tom Ackerley is producing under his and Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment production banner, alongside Mattel’s Robbie Brenner and Heyday Films’ David Heyman. LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz are serving as executive producers.
Production on the film is underway in the U.K. Barbie is expected to hit theaters next year.
Ahead of this project, Issa Rae will voice Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman in this year’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). And can currently be seen on Roar which is streaming on Amazon Prime now.
