Justin Timberlake is set to release a four-part docuseries on Apple TV in December, described by sources as a “tell-all,” Variety reports. One source told the outlet that Janet Jackson will appear in the series discussing the 2004 Super Bowl halftime incident, while another source said Timberlake also addresses recent comments made by former girlfriend Britney Spears. The extent of Jackson’s involvement hasn’t been independently confirmed, and reps for Timberlake, Jackson, and Apple did not respond to requests for comment. The series is directed by Fisher Stevens.
Timberlake and Jackson’s Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show remains one of the most discussed moments in live television history. During the performance, Timberlake tore part of Jackson’s costume, exposing her breast on live broadcast. In the aftermath, Jackson absorbed the overwhelming majority of the professional fallout, later confirming she’d been blacklisted from radio, while Timberlake faced comparatively little consequence and went on to headline the Super Bowl halftime show solo in 2017. The incident resurfaced publicly in 2021 following the release of Framing Britney Spears, prompting Timberlake to issue a public apology to both Jackson and Spears, acknowledging that the industry “sets men, especially white men, up for success” and that he didn’t recognize that dynamic while benefiting from it in real time.
Jackson addressed the incident on her own terms in her 2022 self-titled documentary, saying she and Timberlake remain good friends and have moved on, adding that “it is time for everyone else to do the same.” With Timberlake now preparing to revisit the moment from his own perspective, Jackson’s reported involvement adds a notable new layer to how that history gets retold, this time filtered through Timberlake’s framing after Jackson already shaped her own narrative around it years earlier.
The announcement comes during a relatively quiet stretch for Timberlake, who’s largely stayed out of the spotlight since wrapping his “Forget Tomorrow” tour in July 2025. That tour was shaped by two significant personal developments: a Lyme disease diagnosis he disclosed in July 2025, which he said caused fatigue and nerve damage that affected his performances, and a DWI conviction stemming from a 2024 arrest in Sag Harbor, New York. Timberlake has had a relationship with Apple dating back to 2021, when he starred in the Apple Original film Palmer.
With Jackson’s name now tied to a project framed around Timberlake’s own perspective, the real question heading into December is how much creative control, if any, she has over how her side of the story gets told this time.
