‘Barbershop’ Series Drops First Teaser at CultureCon, Reveals New Owner Ahead of February 10 Premiere

Prime Video released the first teaser for its Barbershop series adaptation Saturday at CultureCon, revealing the identity of the shop’s new owner ahead of the show’s February 10, 2027 premiere, when all eight episodes drop on the platform.

The series stars Jermaine Fowler as Travis “Trav” Porter, who sets out to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather Eddie, the legendary barber played by Cedric the Entertainer in the original films, at Chicago’s iconic Calvin’s barbershop. While the barbers are new, the shop holds onto what’s always made it work: sharp fades, sharper opinions, and a community that treats the chair as a gathering place as much as a business. Fowler leads a cast that includes Brett Gray, Punkie Johnson, Roy Wood Jr., E.J. Bonilla, Bresha Webb, Bokeem Woodbine, Tiana Okoye, and Langston Kerman, with guest appearances from Zack Fox, Ego Nwodim, Diallo Riddle, Ziwe, Tituss Burgess, Comedian CP, Devon Walker, and Belmont Cameli.

The franchise has held a specific place in Black culture since Ice Cube’s Calvin first opened the shop’s doors in 2002, spawning two sequels, Barbershop 2: Back in Business and Barbershop: The Next Cut, along with the Queen Latifah-led spinoff Beauty Shop, and grossing more than $235 million worldwide across the original films. Marshall Todd, who co-wrote the 2002 film, returns as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner alongside Max Searle, giving the series a direct creative link back to the franchise’s origins rather than a reboot built from scratch.

Debuting a first-look teaser at CultureCon, a festival built specifically around Black creators and culture, signals how deliberately Prime Video is positioning this launch toward the audience the franchise has always spoken to directly, rather than treating the rollout as a standard streaming premiere. It also marks the second time Barbershop has made the jump to television, following a short-lived 2005 Showtime series starring Omar Gooding that lasted only one season, making this round a chance to succeed where that earlier adaptation didn’t.

The series comes from Amazon MGM Studios and MGM Television, produced by Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, Mike Stein, and Tiffany Brown for Hartbeat; Bradley Gardner for Busy B Entertainment; Cameron Burnett and Autumn Bailey-Ford for Prominent Productions; George L. Tillman and Robert Teitel for State Street Pictures; and Fowler alongside director Oz Rodriguez. It joins Prime Video’s broader push to revive classic MGM properties, alongside titles like the Legally Blonde prequel Elle and an upcoming Tomb Raider drama.

With the teaser now out and a premiere date locked, the real test will be whether this version of Calvin’s can hold an audience the way the shop itself has held its neighborhood for over two decades.
