John Leguizamo to be Honored at São Paulo’s 50th International Film Festival

John Leguizamo, who stars in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, will be honored at the São Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil, Deadline reports exclusively. The 50th edition of the festival runs through October 29, and will include a masterclass with Leguizamo alongside the presentation of the Leon Cakoff Award, named for the festival’s founder.

On Monday, October 26, the Tony and Emmy winner will take part in the masterclass and receive the award, presented by festival director Renata de Almeida, recognizing what organizers describe as “distinguished figures in culture and the audiovisual industry.” Leguizamo most recently played Eumaeus, Odysseus’s faithful servant and friend, in Nolan and Universal’s The Odyssey, which has become a major box office success.

Leguizamo rose to prominence in the 1990s with performances in Carlito’s Way, Brian De Palma’s Casualties of War, and Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet, in addition to voicing Sid in the Ice Age franchise. For a Colombian-born actor whose career has spanned major studio franchises, prestige drama, and voice work across more than three decades, an honor like this at a major international festival reflects the kind of sustained, genre-spanning longevity that’s increasingly rare in an industry often focused on an actor’s most recent or most commercially dominant role.

Leguizamo’s upcoming projects include Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs and the Daniels’ next film with Universal, following their Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once.

With a career honor arriving the same year as one of his most widely seen performances to date, the recognition positions Leguizamo at a notable inflection point, one where decades of varied, consistent work are converging with his highest-profile role in years.
