JuVee Productions, spearheaded by Viola Davis and Julius Tennon, is making its foray into animation in partnership with N LITE, a Black and Japanese-led media company. Together, they aim to produce afro-anime films that highlight Black and afro-indigenous narratives.

The debut film, “Mfinda,” inspired by Congolese folklore, is a collaborative effort between Congolese-American artist Patience Leiken and N LITE founder Christiano Terry (pictured above). The screenplay, crafted by Donald H. Hewitt, Terry, and Lekien, will see co-direction by D’ART Shtajio’s Arthell Isom, with Japanese screenwriter Mika Abe contributing to the Japanese screenplay.

In collaboration with GKIDS, Studio M2’s Masao Maruyama, and Taro Maki, “Mfinda” was unveiled at the 2023 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, exploring Congolese culture and a world of spirits and ancestors.

Terry, expressing enthusiasm, stated, “We are honored to partner with JuVee Productions on our slate of afro-anime films. Through this collaboration, we hope to spark cultural conversations and ignite the imaginations of audiences around the world, whether they are anime fans or simply fans of timeless storytelling in film. With our flagship title, Mfinda, audiences will journey into Congolese culture and an enchanting world of spirits and ancestors.”

Tennon and Clark from JuVee added, “We are excited to be in business with NLITE bringing the first afro-anime MFINDA to global audiences. This collaboration is a special and timely one and is aligned with JuVee’s continued commitment to produce content and support talent from underrepresented communities.”

Beyond the cinematic venture, the collaboration between N Lite and JuVee will extend to merchandise, graphic novels, and manga, promising a comprehensive and immersive experience for audiences worldwide.
