While Sharp is well-known for her acting, she has been getting her feet wet behind the camera for some time now. Her first foray into this world was on Fox’s Lethal Weapon, where she directed three episodes from Season 1 to 3. She also starred as the female lead role of Trish Murtaugh for all three seasons.
She then went on to direct an episode for The CW/Warner Bros TV-produced teen drama series Gossip Girl during its final season in 2012. That experience led her back to Fox, where she helmed two episodes of Empire last year – including one that aired live as part of the show’s special post-election broadcast following Donald Trump’s upset victory over Hillary Clinton.

The new series, Our Kind Of People, Sharp will be directing is inspired by Lawrence Otis Graham’s book of the same now.It takes place in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, a historical stronghold where the rich and powerful Black elite have come to play for more than 50 years.
The series follows strong-willed single mom Angela Vaughn (Yaya DaCosta) as she sets out to reclaim her family’s name and make an impact with her revolutionary haircare line that highlights the innate, natural beauty of Black women. But she soon discovers a dark secret about her mother’s past that will turn her world upside-down and shake up this community forever.
Our Kind Of People, which also stars Morris Chestnut and Joe Morton, premieres September 21 on Fox.
