Keith David Teams Up with Rob Lowe for Dark Comedy ‘My New Friend Jim’

Keith David and Rob Lowe are leading My New Friend Jim, a character-driven dark comedy from filmmaker Ash Avildsen and Sumerian Pictures — and production is underway now in Nevada.

The film follows two fathers from completely different worlds who form an unexpected bond while searching for a runaway teenage daughter in Reno. What starts as a frantic search turns into an offbeat story about fatherhood, morality, and finding connection in the most chaotic places.

Avildsen calls the film a “twistedly heartfelt” look at how far dads will go for their kids — and how parenthood can blur class lines and assumptions. Set against Reno’s quirky backdrop, the story leans into unlikely friendships, messy humanity, and unexpected humor.

Anthony Mastromauro (The Old Man and the Gun, Finding Steve McQueen) produces alongside Avildsen, with Paul Leighton, Angelene Tania Grode, and Lowe executive producing and Brad LaFave co-producing.

David — currently seen in FX’s The Lowdown and HBO Max’s Duster — continues to stack a powerhouse slate. His upcoming projects include The Ogilvy Fortune and the Rick and Morty spinoff President Curtis.

Avildsen, the creative force behind Sumerian Entertainment — spanning music, comics, and film — most recently helmed Queen of the Ring, centered on trailblazing pro-wrestler Mildred Burke. His credits also include American Satan and series Paradise City.

My New Friend Jim is filming throughout Reno through november, with production spotted at local landmarks and moving through the city this week.

More casting details and release info are expected soon.
