UnPrisoned Renewed for Season 2 as Kerry Washington Renews ABC Signature Deal

Kerry Washington’s UnPrisoned, a dramedy on Hulu, Star+, and Disney+, gets renewed for a second season. This news comes on the heels of Washington renewing her overall deal with ABC Signature, the studio behind the series, as part of a new exclusive 3-year TV deal.

The show, inspired by creator Tracy McMillan’s life, revolves around relationship therapist Paige Alexander (played by Washington) and her life-changing encounter with her father, Edwin Alexander (played by Lindo), getting out of prison.

The second season’s writers’ room is already active, with McMillan, Yvette Lee Bowser, and Washington as executive producers. Under the deal, Washington will produce various projects for ABC Signature through her Simpson Street banner. This includes the drama series Reasonable Doubt, now heading into its second season. Pilar Savone, an executive producer on UnPrisoned, Reasonable Doubt, and Little Fires Everywhere, continues as Simpson Street’s EVP of production and development.

ABC Signature’s EVP, Tracy Underwood, praises Kerry Washington’s creativity and collaboration. Simpson Street, Washington’s production company, has an impressive portfolio, including Confirmation, American Son, Live in Front of a Studio Audience, The Fight, and Street You Grew Up On.

Beyond television, Washington has been active in various projects, such as The School for Good and Evil on Netflix, the Audible scripted podcast series The Prophecy, and upcoming roles in Shadow Force and Tyler Perry’s WWII film 6888. Her memoir, Thicker Than Water, released in September 2023, secured a spot on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Washington is represented by CAA, Washington Square Arts, The Lede Company, and Gretchen Rush. Her continued success reflects her passion, prolific work, and kindness, making her a gold standard for a multihyphenate in the industry.
