Lee Daniels is not giving up on Star. The director and co-creator of the beloved Fox musical drama has gone public with his efforts to revive the series, revealing in a pair of recent videos that every major studio has turned him down but that he is determined to find another way.
“Every studio has told me no, so I am figuring out a creative way to bring it back, because again, studios don’t know the culture,” Daniels said. “I’m going to figure out a way to bring that back, even if it’s on YouTube, because we have our cast. The cast really wants it back. So I’mma give you my word, we’re getting it back.”
The response from fans was overwhelming enough that Daniels followed up with a second video, crediting the outpouring of support as fuel for his efforts and revealing that Zeus Network has entered the conversation. “I had no idea this response was going to be what it has been on Star, and it only makes me work that much harder,” he said. “I’mma call Zeus. Zeus even posted some stuff. I’ve never been in business with them but I’mma check them out too and talk to them. And so is Queen Latifah. And so is the cast. Stay tuned.”
The demand for a revival makes sense given how Star ended. The Fox musical drama, which ran for three seasons from 2016 to 2019, was abruptly canceled to make room for the final season of its companion series Empire, leaving fans with one of the most unresolved cliffhangers in recent television history. The Season 3 finale turned Alex and Derek’s wedding reception into a mass shooting, leaving Cassie, Angel and Mateo shot and bleeding on the floor while Star and Noah discovered their newborn baby had been kidnapped. The series ended there, with no resolution ever provided on screen.
Daniels had previously explored the possibility of a wrap-up TV movie to close out the storylines, but it never materialized. Now, with Zeus Network and even YouTube on the table, a proper conclusion may finally be within reach.
