Don’t make her drink alone—again.
Octavia Spencer is set to reprise her chilling role as Sue Ann—better known as “Ma”—in a sequel to the 2019 cult-favorite horror-thriller. The project is in early development with no director or release date yet, but Blumhouse confirmed the news during its first-ever Business of Fear symposium in Hollywood.
Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, shared the announcement with enthusiasm:
“Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma. Ma likes to say, ‘Don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.”
Directed by The Help’s Tate Taylor, the original Ma followed a group of teens who befriend a lonely woman willing to let them party in her basement—until her obsession takes a terrifying turn. With a modest budget of $5 million, the film pulled in over $60 million worldwide, and Spencer’s performance became an instant horror staple, bolstered by a flood of memes, reaction gifs, and even a viral contest hosted by Spencer herself.
In May, Ma was one of the films re-released as part of Blumhouse’s Halfway to Halloween campaign alongside M3GAN and Annabelle, further cementing its place as a fan favorite.
Plot details for the sequel are being kept under wraps, and no other cast or creatives have been announced. Still, the return of Spencer alone has sparked excitement across social media.
The announcement also coincided with Blumhouse unveiling findings from a 2024 genre study that identified 24 distinct horror subgenres. According to the studio, Ma sits firmly in the Revenge Horror category—alongside the likes of Carrie and Promising Young Woman.
This marks Spencer’s first major return to the horror space since the original film. While she’s kept busy with projects like Apple TV+’s Spirited and upcoming films Tow and The Heart, her reprisal of Ma feels like unfinished business—in the best (and bloodiest) way possible.
