Award-winning actors Mahershala Ali and Tom Hardy are joining forces for the upcoming crime thriller ’77 Blackout,’ directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga. The film is set during a night of chaos and lawlessness in New York City when a massive power outage occurred.
’77 Blackout’ follows the story of five rogue police officers who plan a daring heist targeting three powerful criminal factions: the Hong Kong Triads, the Italian Mafia, and the Harlem Mob. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when a blackout plunges the city into darkness, forcing them to navigate through a dangerous and morally challenging landscape.

Ali, a two-time Oscar winner for his roles in ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Green Book,’ will portray Ray Butler in the film. His recent credits include ‘Leave the World Behind,’ with the highly anticipated ‘Blade’ project also on the horizon. On the other hand, Hardy, known for his roles in ‘Inception,’ ‘The Revenant,’ and the ‘Venom’ franchise, plays Eddie Boyle. Hardy previously collaborated with producer Charles Roven in ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ where he portrayed the iconic character Bane.
The film is produced by Charles Roven, fresh from the success of ‘Oppenheimer,’ alongside Madison Weireter for Atlas Entertainment, and William Green and Aaron Ginsburg for The Cut. ’77 Blackout’ will be introduced to international buyers at the Cannes market by Black Bear, with WME handling U.S. rights.
