Marianne Jean-Baptiste Reunites with Mike Leigh in 'Hard Truths' [FIRST LOOK]

Mike Leigh’s 23rd feature film, “Hard Truths,” has unveiled its cast and a first look image. The film marks a reunion with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, known for her Oscar-nominated role in Leigh’s 1996 film “Secrets & Lies.” Michele Austin, another frequent collaborator with Leigh, also joins the cast.

The film, shot in London in 2023, marks a departure from Leigh’s recent historical epics, such as “Mr. Turner” and “Peterloo,” as it delves into the contemporary world. Described as a “tough but compassionate intimate study of family life,” the plot details remain under wraps.

Leigh’s trusted crew, including producer Georgina Lowe, cinematographer Dick Pope, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, production designer Suzie Davis, composer Gary Yershon, and casting director Nina Gold, have joined him once again. Editor Tania Reddin and make-up and hair designer Nora Robertson make their debut in the Mike Leigh team.

“Hard Truths” is a co-production between Thin Man Films and The Mediapro Studio, co-financed by Film4 in association with Creativity Media. Bleecker Street is set to release the film theatrically in the U.S., while Studiocanal will handle the U.K. release, and Cornerstone Films will manage international sales.

Jean-Baptiste, recognized for her outstanding performance in “Secrets & Lies,” returns to collaborate with Leigh. Her recent credits include “The Book of Clarence,” “Rumble Through the Dark,” and Jeymes Samuels’ biblical drama “The Book Of Clarence.”

Leigh’s “Hard Truths” marks his return to contemporary storytelling after a decade, offering a glimpse into a family’s life with a blend of toughness and compassion. The film is eagerly anticipated and set to make its debut later this year.
