MGM+ has released a new trailer for Treasure Island ahead of the six episode fantasy action series’ October 11 premiere.
The adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel stars David Oyelowo (Selma) as Long John Silver, Tom Sweet (Great Expectations) as Jim Hawkins, and Hayley Atwell (Avengers: Doomsday) as Bess Hawkins, marking the first time a Black actor has played the iconic pirate on screen. The cast also includes Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) as Aaron Graham, Tomer Capone (The Boys) as Billy Bones, Tristan Sturrock (Poldark) as Captain Smollett, and Craige Els as Mr. Arrow.
The official synopsis describes the series as a bold, high stakes coming of age adventure that follows teenager Jim Hawkins as he transforms from a sheltered boy into a hardened young pirate. When Jim gets hold of a legendary treasure map, his mother Bess’s quick thinking leaves him holding dangerous knowledge that puts both their lives at risk. Sailing aboard the Hispaniola, the pair find themselves caught between the charming and terrifying Long John Silver and the duplicitous British agent Aaron Graham, forced to navigate shifting alliances and mounting danger as fortune hangs in the balance. The story unfolds across the Atlantic, a Caribbean on the edge of revolution, and the treacherous Skeleton Island.
Robert Murphy (Vera, Shetland) created the series, with Jeremy Lovering, William McGregor, and Paul Walker directing and Mark Hedges producing. Treasure Island is a Paramount+ original produced in association with MGM+ and Fifth Season, with Playground Entertainment behind the series. MGM+ global head Michael Wright called the adaptation a perfect expression of the network’s brand, describing it as classic Hollywood storytelling reimagined for a modern audience with an extraordinary ensemble cast.
The series premieres on MGM+ in the U.S. on October 11, followed by its Paramount+ debut in the U.K. and Ireland the next day, with new episodes releasing weekly through mid November. Fifth Season holds international rights elsewhere.
Stevenson’s novel remains one of the most adapted stories in entertainment history, with past versions ranging from the 1950 Disney film starring Robert Newton to the 1996 musical Muppet Treasure Island and Sky’s 2012 miniseries starring Eddie Izzard as Long John Silver.
