Michael B. Jordan is reportedly in early negotiations to step into the role of undercover detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in Universal Pictures’ upcoming Miami Vice reboot, directed by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski.
While talks are still in the early stages, sources say Jordan is actively engaging with the project after scheduling was adjusted to accommodate his directing duties on The Thomas Crown Affair. The feature is set to begin production next year and hit theaters on August 6, 2027.
The film—written by Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy and produced by Dylan Clark and Kosinski—reimagines the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, drawing inspiration from the pilot and first season of the landmark NBC series created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Michael Mann.
The original Miami Vice made Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas household names as detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, blending sleek visuals, pastel fashion, and an iconic soundtrack that defined an era. Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell later headlined Mann’s 2006 feature adaptation, which earned more than $160 million worldwide.
If Jordan signs on, he’ll bring his trademark intensity and grounded humanity to the role—qualities that have anchored projects from Fruitvale Station and Black Panther to his box-office-breaking horror hit Sinners. Following that success, Jordan has been directing, producing, and starring in The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios under his Outlier Society banner.
The Legacy of Rico Tubbs
If the deal closes, Jordan will become the third actor to portray Detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs. The character was first brought to life by Philip Michael Thomas in the 1984 NBC series, where his partnership with Don Johnson’s Sonny Crockett helped define cool for a generation. Jamie Foxx later took on the role in Michael Mann’s 2006 film adaptation, infusing it with a grittier, more grounded energy.
Now, nearly two decades later, Michael B. Jordan is poised to bring a new edge to the iconic detective — bridging the legacy of Tubbs across television, film, and now a new era of blockbuster storytelling.

As for the role of Sonny Crockett, casting is still open, with the studio aiming to lock in Jordan’s on-screen partner soon.
