NBC Gives Series Order to Workplace Comedy ‘Sunset P.I.’ Starring Keith David and Langston Kerman

NBC has officially handed out a series order to Sunset P.I., the single-camera workplace comedy from the Brooklyn Nine-Nine creative team of Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, with the series set to debut during the network’s 2026–27 midseason rollout.

Led by Keith David and Jake Johnson, Sunset P.I. centers on a Los Angeles private investigation office where legacy, ego, and casework collide under one roof. Keith David stars as Julius Royal, the veteran, old-school head of the agency whose approach to the job is rooted in structure, discipline, and tradition. Jake Johnson star as Mickey Wilder, a former LAPD officer rebuilding his life after a personal and professional collapse, bringing instinct, cynicism, and unpredictability into the workplace.

The two function as the series’ core dynamic, with the show built around their tension, contrast, and shared investigative work. Langston Kerman plays Justin Royal, Julius’ son, who is navigating both family legacy and his place within the agency. Jane Levy appears as a sharp investigative journalist whose work intersects with the firm’s cases, while Mary Shalaby plays the receptionist whose disinterest in chaos remains a consistent running beat.

On the creative side, the series comes from Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, with Akiva Schaffer directing the pilot. Produced by Universal Television, Sunset P.I. continues NBC’s long-standing interest in workplace comedies, this time filtered through an LA noir lens that nods to the tradition of fictional private eyes stretching back to Philip Marlowe.

NBC’s 2026–27 Slate Also Includes Additional New Series

Alongside Sunset P.I., NBC has also handed out series orders to several new scripted and unscripted projects as part of its broader 2026–27 rollout — including a major reboot of a classic detective franchise.

THE ROCKFORD FILES (Drama – Midseason)

The contemporary reboot follows newly paroled private investigator James Rockford (David Boreanaz), who returns to Los Angeles after serving time for a crime he didn’t commit. Using his trademark charm and wit, Rockford takes on cases across the city — but his search for legitimacy quickly puts him in the crosshairs of both local law enforcement and organized crime. Michaela McManus, Felix Solis and Jacki Weaver star in the remake.

LINE OF FIRE (Drama – Fall)

A family of federal law enforcement agents spanning the FBI, U.S. Marshals, Secret Service, and DOJ becomes entangled in a deadly conspiracy after a routine case spirals into something far larger. The series stars Peter Krause and Hope Davis.

NEWLYWEDS (Comedy – Fall)

A multi-camera comedy about a free-spirited woman and a structured professor who impulsively marry after a whirlwind romance, forcing them to navigate whether long-term compatibility can match instant chemistry. The series stars Téa Leoni, Tim Daly, and features Jamie Lee Curtis in a recurring role.

THE TRAITORS (Unscripted – Fall)

A civilian version of the hit psychological competition series set inside a Scottish castle, where contestants must identify hidden traitors while competing for a cash prize in a high-stakes game of deception and trust.
