Zainab Johnson is bringing her second comedy hour to Netflix, and this one comes with a notable first: it’s the debut stand-up special from the Obamas’ Higher Ground. Toxically Optimistic premieres October 27.
The special is built on a show Johnson first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it earned a Best Comedy Show nomination at The List Festival Awards. She wrote, performed, directed, and co-produced the hour herself, using life’s setbacks, absurdities, and contradictions as raw material for her signature optimistic worldview. It also marks a deepening of her relationship with Netflix, following her turn co-hosting the 2020 reality series 100 Humans.
“In Toxically Optimistic,” Johnson said, “I gave myself permission to be silly by inviting the audience to focus on the good during a time when chaos and fear are at an all time high. I encourage everyone to find a little whimsy in the most unexpected situations.”
For Higher Ground, the project represents a genre expansion. Jessie Dicovitsky, the company’s head of TV, executive produced the special and described the partnership as a natural entry point into stand-up. “We’re honored to partner with Zainab on Toxically Optimistic and to bring her singular voice and perspective to audiences around the world,” Dicovitsky said. “This special is a wonderful way for Higher Ground to enter the stand-up space, and we couldn’t be more optimistic about producing Zainab’s hilarious and truly original hour.”
Johnson, a comedian, actress, and writer, is best known for starring in all four seasons of Prime Video’s Upload. Her debut special, Hijabs Off, arrived on Prime Video in 2023, and she’s also made appearances on Late Night with Seth Meyers, NBC’s Last Comic Standing, and HBO’s All Def Comedy. Her live résumé spans international festivals including Just for Laughs Montreal, the Melbourne Comedy Festival, and Edinburgh.
Founded by former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama in 2018, Higher Ground has built a slate that includes Leave the World Behind, Crip Camp, Rustin, and American Symphony, alongside podcasts like IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson, The Wonder of Stevie, and Fela Kuti: Fear No Man.
