Nia Long and Larenz Tate — the iconic duo behind New Line’s Love Jones — are set to reunite once again, this time for an untitled romantic drama at Netflix directed by Sylvie’s Love filmmaker Eugene Ashe.
The film, inspired by Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite album, has officially been greenlit at the streamer. While plot details are under wraps, the project is expected to explore themes of love, intimacy, and emotional connection — much like Maxwell’s groundbreaking R&B debut that inspired it.
Ashe co-wrote the screenplay with This Is Us writer-producer Kay Oyegun. The film marks a reunion for Long and Tate, who also appear together in Lionsgate’s Michael — Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic releasing April 24, 2026 — portraying Katherine Jackson and Berry Gordy, respectively.

The Netflix project will be produced by James Lopez, Charles D. King, and Poppy Hanks for MACRO Film Studios, with Maxwell, John D. Hammond, Long, and Tate serving as executive producers. Sources reveal the film was originally developed at Amazon before being acquired by Netflix.
