Nia Long and Larenz Tate to Reunite in Netflix Romantic Drama Inspired by Maxwell’s ‘Urban Hang Suite’ Album

Nia Long and Larenz Tate — the iconic duo behind New Line’s Love Jones — are set to reunite once again, this time for an untitled romantic drama at Netflix directed by Sylvie’s Love filmmaker Eugene Ashe.

The film, inspired by Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite album, has officially been greenlit at the streamer. While plot details are under wraps, the project is expected to explore themes of love, intimacy, and emotional connection — much like Maxwell’s groundbreaking R&B debut that inspired it.

Ashe co-wrote the screenplay with This Is Us writer-producer Kay Oyegun. The film marks a reunion for Long and Tate, who also appear together in Lionsgate’s Michael — Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic releasing April 24, 2026 — portraying Katherine Jackson and Berry Gordy, respectively.

The Netflix project will be produced by James Lopez, Charles D. King, and Poppy Hanks for MACRO Film Studios, with Maxwell, John D. Hammond, Long, and Tate serving as executive producers. Sources reveal the film was originally developed at Amazon before being acquired by Netflix.

Eugene Ashe, whose Sylvie’s Love earned an Emmy nomination and critical praise for its lush storytelling and nostalgic style, is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Granderson Des Rochers.

Long, known for The Best Man: The Final Chapters, Missing, and You People, is repped by Brecheen Feldman Breimer, while Tate — who continues his run as Councilman Tate in Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost — is repped by Independent Artist Group and attorney John Meigs.
