No Blade Movie, But Mahershala Ali Is Still Swinging One in the Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother Teaser Trailer

Mahershala Ali and director Bassam Tariq were supposed to make a Blade movie together. That never happened, but their long-awaited collaboration is finally here in a different form, and Ali is still putting a blade to good use. Amazon MGM Studios and Orion Pictures have released the first trailer for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, an action thriller arriving in select theaters September 25 before expanding nationwide on October 2 and October 9.

Ali stars as Latif, a devoutly religious hitman trying to hold together his faith, his work and his role as a father. When his wife dies, he sets out on a desperate journey across Houston to protect his children, as enemy forces close in and his own beliefs begin to unravel from within. Ali called Latif “the most honest and complicated character I’ve read in a script” at CinemaCon earlier this year, adding that the project is “exactly the kind of movie I’ve been wanting to make.”

The title draws from an Islamic hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad emphasizes honoring one’s mother three times before mentioning the father.

Joining Ali is a stacked cast including John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito, Tramell Tillman, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Tiffany Boone and Adia. Tariq produces alongside Lucan Toh and Babak Anvari.

Tariq originally departed Marvel’s long-stalled Blade reboot in 2022 after a turbulent development process. The project has since cycled through multiple rewrites and director changes with its future still unclear. Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother marks the first time he and Ali have worked together since that parting.

The film opens September 25 in a crowded marketplace alongside Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast, the Cannes title Victorian Psycho, a re-release of Avengers: Endgame and Universal’s animated comedy Forgotten Island.
