The official trailer has arrived for Wildcards, the courtroom thriller from writer-director Wes Miller that opens exclusively in theaters nationwide on August 27, with special Q&A engagements at select stops.
The film follows the trial of Theodore Sterling (Crew Morrow), a privileged young man accused of sexually assaulting a young Black woman. As jurors from vastly different backgrounds clash over the evidence, tensions escalate between Assistant State Attorney James Jones (Aries Spears), a determined prosecutor, and Greg Sims (Leon), a veteran defense attorney with a flawless 25-year record. The case takes a shocking turn with the arrival of a mysterious wildcard witness who claims to know the truth about the night in question, raising unsettling questions of bias, credibility and justice.
The film won Best Narrative Feature at the 2026 Essence Film Festival and is being released via BLacklight and Dark Star Pictures. The theatrical rollout is designed as more than a traditional moviegoing experience. Select screenings will be paired with moderated discussions featuring cast and creative team members, and in some cities, local community leaders, artists and cultural voices.
“Wildcards represents everything I’m passionate about as a filmmaker, creating authentic and meaningful genre entertainment for the culture,” Miller said. “This theatrical tour is about taking that directly to our communities, city-by-city, and creating the kind of theatrical experience that reminds people why cinema matters.”
The ensemble cast includes Leon (The Temptations, Cool Runnings), Elise Neal (All of Us), Aries Spears (MADtv), Stakiah Lynn Washington (Angel City), Crew Morrow (The Bold and the Beautiful), Courtney Grace (Disclosure Day), Samantha Walkes (Orphan: First Kill) and Robert Catrini (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back). The film is produced by Andrew van den Houten and Wes Miller.
