Prime Video has released the official trailer for Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association, a four-part docuseries that revisits the rise, influence, and eventual fall of the American Basketball Association—a short-lived league whose impact permanently reshaped the modern game.
All four episodes will premiere February 12, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Directed by Kenan Kamwana Holley, Soul Power traces the ABA’s 1967 launch and its nine-season run as a disruptive force that challenged the NBA both on and off the court. While many ABA franchises ultimately folded or relocated, the league’s legacy is undeniable—from introducing the three-point shot and the slam dunk contest to helping usher in a more expressive, player-driven style of basketball.
The series also examines how the ABA helped redefine the business of sports, including opening doors for women to take on more meaningful roles behind the scenes, and accelerating the rise of players who would go on to become legends. Among them: Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Spencer Haywood, George Gervin, Rick Barry, and George Karl. Several former ABA franchises—now the Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and San Antonio Spurs—would later become staples of the NBA following the leagues’ 1976 merger.
2026 marks the 50th anniversary of that historic merger, making the timing of the series especially fitting.
Presented by Prime Video Sports, Soul Power is executive produced by Erving, Grammy, Emmy, and Academy Award winner Common (who also serves as narrator), Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, George Karl and Brett Goldberg of Truth+Media, and Kenan Kamwana Holley via Holley Films. The project is produced in partnership with Scott Tarter and the Dropping Dimes Foundation, which has spent the past decade supporting retired ABA players with financial and health resources.
“The ABA wasn’t just a league—it was a movement,” Erving said in a statement. “It gave players freedom, creativity, and opportunity at a time when none of that was guaranteed. This series tells that story honestly and educates people on why the game we see today exists because of what we started back then.”
The newly released trailer features appearances from Erving, George Gervin, Charles Barkley, Rick Barry, Bob Costas, Walt Frazier, Spencer Haywood, and more, offering a glimpse at how Soul Power connects basketball innovation, cultural shifts, and player empowerment into one larger story.
At its core, Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association argues that modern basketball doesn’t look the way it does by accident—and that the ABA’s influence is still being felt every time the ball goes up from beyond the arc.
