Robin Thede is developing a new comedy, Disengagement for HBO. She will also write and executive produce the new half-hour comedy series.
Disengagement will revolve around the Cole family, whose carefully crafted image is shattered after a business deal gone wrong. The show explores the chaos that ensues in the wake of this implosion, revealing the dysfunction that lurks behind the family’s facade of perfection.
Thede is no stranger to HBO, having signed a three-year overall deal with the network in May 2022 to develop content exclusively for HBO, HBO Max, and Warner Bros. Television under her banner, For Better or Words, Inc. She is also the creator, showrunner, executive producer, writer, and star of “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” which is set to premiere its fourth season on HBO and HBO Max on Friday, April 14.

In addition to her work on “Disengagement” and “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” Thede will also star in the upcoming Amazon Studios feature “Candy Cane Lane” alongside Eddie Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross.
“Disengagement” will be produced by Meghan Cheek through For Better or Words, Inc. Thede’s involvement in the project adds to the growing list of Black women showrunners on HBO, including Issa Rae of “Insecure” and Michaela Coel of “I May Destroy You.”
