Samuel Monroe Jr., whose work became woven into some of the most defining Black films of the 1990s, has died. He was 52. His mother, Joyce Patton, confirmed his passing on Facebook.
“I want to thank all of my Facebook family and friends, new and old, for praying for Samuel Monroe Jr., my son,” Patton wrote. “But today God called him home. Please honor my final request to pray for the family, especially his 3 children.”
Monroe had been hospitalized since April following a devastating health battle that began approximately 18 months earlier, when he contracted meningitis while working on a project in Las Vegas. According to his wife Shawna Stewart, Monroe was repeatedly misdiagnosed at multiple hospitals, allowing the infection to spread untreated to his brain and spine. By April, he had been placed on life support. His condition grew more complicated after he developed MRSA pneumonia and kidney failure requiring dialysis.
There were brief signs of improvement. Monroe was at one point able to breathe without a ventilator for several hours and his kidney function improved enough to discontinue dialysis, but those gains did not hold. In late July he suffered more than 20 seizures over two days, went into cardiac arrest and returned to the ICU. He remained hospitalized until his passing.
Monroe got his first on-screen credit in the Hughes Brothers’ 1993 landmark Menace II Society, playing Ilena’s cousin in a film that became one of the defining works of 1990s Black cinema. He went on to appear in Tales from the Hood (1995), the comedy Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996), F. Gary Gray’s Set It Off (1996), starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise, and Ice Cube’s directorial debut The Players Club (1998). His television credits included Out All Night and NYPD Blue, and he continued acting in later years with appearances in the 2023 films Packz and Payment Received.
Monroe is survived by his wife, his mother and his three children.
