Tubi just made a bold move.
The free, ad-supported streamer has officially picked up Demascus, the long-shelved sci-fi comedy from AMC Networks and playwright Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm. The six-episode half-hour series will debut exclusively as a Tubi Original starting Thursday, August 7.
Starring Station 19‘s Okieriete Onaodowan and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air icon Janet Hubert, Demascus follows a 33-year-old Black man using experimental, reality-bending tech to navigate the chaos of modern life and search for the answer to one of life’s biggest questions: What does it take to be a good man?
The cast also includes Caleb Eberhardt (Judas and the Black Messiah), Shakira Ja’nai Paye (Single Drunk Female, black-ish), and Martin Lawrence (Bad Boys) in a recurring role.
Originally ordered in 2022 and completed before AMC’s cost-cutting measures shelved it in early 2023, Demascus was part of the network’s “scripts-to-series” model. With production already wrapped, fans and insiders alike wondered if it would ever see the light of day. That day has now come, thanks to a partnership between Tubi and AMC Studios.
“Through his titular character Demascus, Tearrance Chisholm asks one of life’s simplest questions… and answers it with some of the most surprising and nuanced revelations one could expect,” said executive producer Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul).
Tubi’s SVP of Content Acquisition and Partnerships, Samuel Harowitz, added: “Demascus is a bold, genre-bending blend of comedy and sci-fi that challenges conventions as much as it entertains. At Tubi, we champion stories that surprise, provoke, delight, and resonate deeply with engaged fandoms.”
Chisholm—best known for plays like Hooded: Or Being Black for Dummies and Br’er Cotton—created the series and serves as co-showrunner alongside Kirk A. Moore (American Crime, For Life). The series is executive produced by Johnson and Myki Bajaj through Gran Via Productions.
The acquisition deal was brokered by Benin Mtume for Tubi and Mark Dee-Shapland, SVP of Global Content Sales at AMC Networks.
After being quietly shelved, Demascus is now not only back—but premiering on one of the fastest-growing platforms for free, genre-forward content. We love a good comeback.
