The trailer for The Comic Shop is finally here — and if you’re like me, you’ve been following this journey from the jump. Created by Cheyenne Ewulu, the indie sitcom made waves earlier this month at San Diego Comic-Con during the “Making A Maverick: Creating Art Outside The System” panel, moderated by Kevin Smith. Smith himself called the trailer “fucking funny” — and he wasn’t wrong.
The Comic Shop is a workplace mockumentary centered on a group of friends doing everything they can (no matter how ridiculous) to keep their beloved comic book store alive. It stars Cheyenne Ewulu, Zeno Robinson (My Hero Academia, Craig of the Creek), Shanae Cole (Grown-ish), and Grayson Niles (The Goldbergs).
What makes this even more special is how it came together. Produced under Ewulu’s Awkward Virgo Productions, the project was fully crowdfunded via Kickstarter — and went on to raise over $200,000, making it one of the most-backed TV series in Kickstarter history. A true example of building community and doing it outside the traditional system.
And now, it’s almost here. The Comic Shop will officially premiere August 29, 2025, streaming for free on the Awkward Virgo TV YouTube channel: youtube.com/@AwkwardVirgoTV
Here’s the truth: I don’t even read comics like that. But I love comic book shows and movies — and this? This is my lane. It’s funny, quirky, and Cheyenne’s character lowkey gives me Easter from Insecure energy. If The Office and Abbott Elementary had a cousin who lived in a comic book shop, The Comic Shop would be it.
