Meet the Creative Force Behind ‘The Comic Shop’: Cheyenne Ewulu is Building a Movement, Not Just a Show [INTERVIEW]

Sometimes the best conversations take a few twists before they finally land—and that was definitely the case with Cheyenne Ewulu. Between reschedules, life updates, and a few cosmic mishaps, we finally got to connect. And trust, it was worth the wait.

Cheyenne Ewulu isn’t just a filmmaker or a creator—she’s a whole ecosystem of originality, consistency, and vision. With The Comic Shop, she’s doing what so many talk about but rarely execute: building something from the ground up, by and for her community. And she’s doing it with heart, humor, and a laser-focused sense of purpose.

The Comic Shop is more than a workplace comedy. It’s a love letter to Black nerd culture. It’s a nod to those of us who grew up obsessing over animated heroes but never quite saw ourselves reflected in those stories. Set in a struggling LA comic book store, the show blends razor-sharp comedy with heartfelt reflections on community, ambition, and the hustle to keep your dreams—and your doors—open. Think Abbott Elementary meets High Fidelity… but for the Blurreds and beyond.

Instead of waiting for permission or industry greenlights that came with strings, Cheyenne took the independent route. That meant late nights, daily videos, strategic rollouts, and turning every social platform into a digital stage. And the people showed up. The Comic Shop became one of the most funded TV projects on Kickstarter ever—because Cheyenne didn’t just ask for support, she gave people a reason to believe.

From the intentionally nerdy theme song by Flyana Boss and Kiera Please, to her strategic content planning (yes, even the anime shirt was on purpose), everything about Cheyenne’s approach is about building something sustainable, from vision to viewer. What started as a proof of concept in 2023 has grown into a full-fledged movement—one that’s still indie, still scrappy, but absolutely undeniable.

Cheyenne’s story is a blueprint. For Black creators. For indie filmmakers. For anyone whose dream doesn’t fit the traditional mold. And through it all, she remains grounded, transparent about the highs and lows, and fiercely committed to showing that originality, when paired with relentless effort, can cut through the noise.
