The official trailer for The Fire Inside, a powerful biopic on the life of boxing champion Claressa Shields, has just been released, building anticipation for its December 25th theater debut.
The film which already has Oscar buzz around Brian Tyree Henry’s portrayal of Shield’s coach, Jason Crutchfield, film tells Shields’ (portrayed by Ryan Destiny) journey to become the only American boxer to win consecutive Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016.
Directed by Rachel Morrison, who is making her feature film debut, and penned by Oscar-winning screenwriter Barry Jenkins, The Fire Inside focuses on Shields’ high school years as she prepares for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Morrison aims to capture the grit and determination of Shields, who hails from Flint, Michigan. “Claressa Shields is one of the best athletes of all time, and her story is profoundly inspiring,” Morrison says. “She’s relatable and real, flawed and human. Her story makes us feel like if she can prevail, we can too.”
The film not only spotlights Shields’ athletic achievements but also delves into her personal journey, portraying the challenges and resilience that defined her path to success. Shields, now 29, has won all 14 of her professional boxing matches and holds multiple championship titles, further cementing her legacy as one of boxing’s greatest. Reflecting on the film’s portrayal of her life, Shields tells PEOPLE, “My life story was fit for the big screen because I am really a once-in-a-lifetime athlete and person.”
Ryan Destiny, known for her role in Star, underwent intense physical and mental preparation to embody Shields. “I had to transform and get into the best shape of my life,” Destiny shares. “Claressa is so layered, and our film shows her humanity beyond the ring.”
Brian Tyree Henry, an Academy Award® nominee, brings a compelling performance as Crutchfield, Shields’ tough-love coach who played an instrumental role in her rise. Their on-screen dynamic captures the complexities of a mentor-student relationship that goes beyond training, highlighting the emotional and psychological support crucial to Shields’ success.
