The highly-anticipated live-action remake of the classic Disney film “The Little Mermaid” is set to hit theaters on May 26. The movie, which stars Halle Bailey as Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, promises to be a magical adventure under the sea.
The plot of the movie is based on the original 1989 animated classic, following the story of Ariel, a mermaid who falls in love with a human prince and makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula to trade her voice for legs. Along the way, Ariel must navigate the challenges of life on land and try to win the heart of Prince Eric before Ursula can claim her as her own.
More images from the movie were released via Entertainment Weekly that showcased the star-studded cast which includes Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton. And introduces Prince Eric’s mother portrayed Harry Potter and the Cursed Child star Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina (via EW). Dumezweni joins as a new character that was added in this version. Which adds this film’s diverse cast more inline with the Brandy-led 1997 Cinderella retelling.
“It’s this sense of the babies being two outsiders of their origin story and then finding each other,” Dumezweni says. “So Eric being mothered and grown by a woman who looks like me on an island and you hear that story, and then you look at Ariel and her family and she being the outsider of that. There’s that sense of, ‘We recognize each other when we know what each other’s been through.'”
